Immunizations Q & A

Why should I get immunized?

It’s better for your health to try to prevent a disease or illness, rather than treat it. This is particularly true if you’re vulnerable to serious infection due to a weakened immune system.

The goal of immunizations is to prevent illnesses and diseases that can become serious and even life threatening. Though everyone should get immunized, it’s particularly important if you are:

  • A young child with an immune system that isn’t strong yet
  • Pregnant or trying to become pregnant
  • Older, such as those over the age of 65

It’s also important to get updated vaccinations if you’re getting ready to travel abroad; certain countries may have specific recommendations for immunizations.

Which types of immunizations do I need?

Brandi administers immunizations for children ages 2+, as well as geriatric adults. In general, children and teens need the following types of vaccinations:

  • Diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis (DTaP)
  • Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Meningococcal
  • Poliovirus

Many of your childhood vaccines protect you for life, although as an adult, you typically need DTaP boosters once every 10 years. It’s important for older adults to have shingles and pneumococcal vaccines as well.

Additionally, Brandi recommends that all children, adults, and seniors come to the clinic every fall for seasonal flu shots. The flu shot continues to be the leading way to lower your risk of the flu and its severity if you do become ill.

Are there any side effects of immunizations?

Modern immunizations are safe and highly effective. Brandi is happy to answer any questions and discuss any concerns you may have.

Some immunizations cause minor soreness or swelling around the injection site. Occasionally, certain vaccines cause mild flu-like symptoms, such as fatigue, muscle aches, and low-grade fever. These minor issues generally resolve by the following day.
